Whittier Narrows Equestrian Center

Funding was provided by the Rivers and Mountains Conservancy to design a model equestrian facility at the Whittier Narrows Equestrian Center. The purpose of the project was to develop a model that can be applied to equestrian centers along the San Gabriel River, assuring future viability amidst evolving regional stormwater regulations. BlueGreen developed strategies that address stormwater contamination through site design and landscape features at the 45-acre site, including a series of vegetated bioswales, bio-infiltration ponds and sand filters capable of containing and treating a 25-year storm. After treatment, water is passed on to the natural area northwest of the Equestrian Center. All BMP design elements function both as a treatment and natural system elements.
BlueGreen also developed a Habitat Restoration & Mitigation Plan for the 10-acre natural area of the San Gabriel River adjacent to the Equestrian Center, including a conceptual vegetative restoration plan, plant palettes & strategies for the removal of invasive species.
